Stella Lucile Pecot Robinson, longtime nurse educator, recently passed away at the age of 103.
A native of Franklin, Louisiana, Dr. Robinson earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from historically Black Dillard University in New Orleans. She went on to earn her master’s degree in nursing education from Columbia University and a doctorate in adult education with a concentration in gerontology from the University of Mississippi.
In 1952, Dr. Robinson joined the faculty of the Los Angeles County Hospital School of Nursing, making her the first African American instructor to teach in a registered nursing program in the state of California. Throughout her lifetime, Dr. Robinson taught at eight nursing schools across five states, including two HBCUs: Alcorn State University in Mississippi and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in California. Her career culminated with her retirement from the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
