New Leadership Roles for Five Black Administrators in Higher Education

Breana M. Ware is the inaugural general counsel for Spelman College in Atlanta. Before her new role, she was a vice president and counsel for a national development and construction firm. Earlier in her career, she spent nearly six years on the legal affairs attorney team at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

Ware is a summa cum laude graduate of Boston College, where she majored in English literature. She holds a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School.

Dianne Pledger was named director of the Diggs Art Gallery at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. Her background includes over three decades of leadership experience in arts management, fundraising, and cultural programming. She is the principal consultant of Pledger Consulting, a firm she founded that specializes in nonprofit administration, strategic planning, grant writing, board development, and organizational capacity building.

Pledger is an alumna of North Carolina Central University.

Kevin White is the new director of athletics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. For the past four years, White has served as deputy director of athletics at Clemson University in South Carolina. Earlier in his career, he held key leadership roles in athletics at Northwestern University in Illinois, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and Georgia State University.

White holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, a master’s degree from Georgia State University, and an MBA from Kennesaw State University.

Angelique D. Stallings is deputy chief of staff at North Carolina Central University. Most recently, Stallings served as vice president of community investment for the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce. She is also the founder and principal consultant of the MochaMind Agency, a public relations and marketing firm for nonprofit, corporate, and mission-driven organizations.

Stallings is an alumna of North Carolina Central University, where she majored in criminal justice.

LaVada R. Rice is vice president of enrollment management at Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina. With over 20 years of higher education experience, Dr. Rice most recently served as director of admissions at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Missouri. Earlier in her career, she was director of Metro St. Louis Extended Campuses at Webster University. She has also served in admissions leadership roles at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

Dr. Rice earned a bachelor’s degree in human resource management, a master’s degree in nonprofit management and a doctorate in higher education administration from Lindenwood University.
