Kennesaw State’s Marrielle Myers Elected President of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Marrielle Myers, associate professor of mathematics education at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, was elected president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. She will serve a one-year term as president-elect, followed by a two-year term as president.

At Kennesaw State, Dr. Myers teaches math methods and content courses to prospective elementary teachers, as well as educational equity and diversity courses for practicing teachers. Her scholarship centers on three areas: preparing and supporting teachers’ development of political knowledge and critical consciousness, supporting Black teachers’ understanding of teaching for justice and engagement in creative insubordination at predominantly White institutions, and supporting teachers and teacher educators to navigate educational censorship.

“My goal is to ensure that the teachers I prepare are ready to embrace, elevate, and empower every student they serve,” said Dr. Myers. “As we work to improve mathematics teacher education, we must have open hands and open hearts to the diverse needs of students, teachers, schools, communities, and other partners. I hope to do this work in a way that centers humanity, community, and flexibility.”

An HBCU graduate, Dr. Myers earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hampton University in Virginia. She received her master of education degree and Ph.D. in mathematics education from North Carolina State University.
