New Appointments for a Trio of Black Scholars in Academia

Cacey Bester was promoted to associate professor of physics at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. In her research, Dr. Bester studies experimental soft condensed matter, granular flow, and sediment transport to understand how disordered systems deform, flow, and fail. She joined the Swarthmore faculty in 2019 after conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Bester is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago.

James Daniels, assistant professor and coordinator of creative writing in the English department at North Carolina A&T State University, is the second Poet Laureate for the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. His appointment runs through December 2028. At NCA&T, Daniels assists with the Aggie Poet Laureate program, mentoring students through poetry reviews and attendance at poetry events on and off campus.

Daniels received his bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from North Carolina State University and his master of fine arts degree in creative writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Tonya L. Peeples has been named a special adviser to the executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University. She will be stepping down from her current role as the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering in Penn State’s College of Engineering to help shape the creation of the university’s new office of student success. A professor of chemical engineering, Dr. Peeples previously served as the College of Engineering’s inaugural associate dean for equity and inclusion.

Dr. Peeples received her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University and a doctorate in the same discipline from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
