In Memoriam: Gregory V. Murphy, 1956–2026

Gregory V. Murphy, professor of electrical engineering at Tuskegee University in Alabama, passed away on April 21. He was 70 years old.

Dr. Murphy was an alumnus of the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of the second cohort of the Minority Engineering Scholarship Program from 1974 to 1979. He completed his doctorate in 1990, making him the first Black man to earn a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Murphy taught for more than two decades at Tuskegee University. For 12 years, he served as head of the department of electrical engineering. Throughout his long tenure, he oversaw the graduation of over 70 Black students with master’s degrees in electrical engineering. In partnership with the Naval Sea Systems Command, Dr. Murphy established a systems engineering program at the HBCU.

In his own research, Dr. Murphy specialized in power system stability, load frequency control, and renewable energy. His research led to partnerships with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, ALCOA, DuPont, and the University of Alabama.
