Five Black Americans Appointed to Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Derrick Jordan has been named chief human resources officer at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Jordan previously served as chief human resources officer for the City of Macon, Georgia. He also has two decades of dedicated service in the United States Navy. Jordan is the author of Business Character Matters: Ten Habits of Highly Successful Managers (Authorhouse, 2019).

Jordan holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in human resources from Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Joelle L. Rollins-Kent is the new director of residence life and housing at South Carolina State University. Rollins-Kent has extensive experience in university housing and residence life, including prior leadership roles at Georgia State University, Clark Atlanta University, and the University of Cincinnati. Most recently, she was interim director of residence life and university housing at the College of Coastal Georgia.

Rollins-Kent received her bachelor of social work degree and her master’s degree in education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Kenneth Goodrum was appointed director of the William A. McClain Center at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Most recently, Goodrum served as principal of the Dayton Business Technology High School in Ohio. His experience in higher education includes prior student services roles with Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, the University of Dayton, and Sinclair Community College in Dayton.

Goodrum earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Central State University and his master’s degree in higher education administration from Wright State University in Dayton.

Roderick Smothers Jr. was appointed director of athletics at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. Smothers has an extensive background in HBCU athletics administration. For the past three years, he has served as assistant athletic director for ticketing at Alabama A&M University. Earlier, he led the athletics department at Philander Smith University in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Smothers holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Langston University in Oklahoma and a master’s degree in sports management from the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Rashida Willard was promoted to vice president for equity and student services at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. Before her new role, she served as the community college’s interim associate vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She previously held administrative roles with Clark College in Washington and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Dr. Willard holds an associate’s degree in organizational dynamics and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Warner Pacific University in Portland, Oregon; an MBA from Concordia University in Portland; and a doctorate in education with a concentration in leadership, inquiry, and continuous improvement from Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin.
