Dawna Jones was promoted to associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
A Duke administrator for the past five years, Dr. Jones most recently served as assistant vice president for identity centers and community development. Before that role, she was director of Duke’s Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture. Prior to joining Duke, Dr. Jones spent eight years in student affairs roles at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has also held leadership positions at West Chester University in Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Jones is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree in social work from West Chester University, a master’s degree in higher education management from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate in transformative leadership for civic and community engagement from North Carolina A&T State University.
Michael J. States is the inaugural associate dean for student services and support and dean of students at the University of Miami School of Law in Florida.
States comes to his new role with an extensive background as a law school administrator. Most recently, he was associate dean for student success and inclusive excellence for the University of Wisconsin Law School. Earlier, he was assistant dean for admissions, financial aid, and diversity initiatives at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. States has also served in various roles at the University of North Carolina School of Law and the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.
States is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where he majored in political science. He earned his juris doctorate from the Saint Louis University School of Law in Missouri.
Kelvin Rutledge has been named vice president and dean of student affairs at the State University of New York’s Westchester Community College.
With more than 15 years of higher education experience, Dr. Rutledge comes to Westchester Community College from Southern Connecticut State University. He served in a variety of strategic leadership roles there, including director of career and professional development, associate vice president, and interim vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Earlier in his career, Dr. Rutledge led career development initiatives at Florida State University and the University of Georgia.
Dr. Rutledge is a graduate of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he majored in sociology and political science. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education from Florida State University.
