Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.
The United Negro College Fund received a $12 million gift from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation. The funds will provide $1 million each to the endowments of 12 UNCF member institutions with a proven record of preparing educators, nurses, and other health care professionals: Benedict College in South Carolina, Dillard University in Louisiana, Edward Waters University in Florida, Huston-Tillotson University in Texas, Jarvis Christian University in Texas, Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina, Miles College in Alabama, Oakwood University in Alabama, Shaw University in North Carolina, Stillman College in Alabama, Tuskegee University in Alabama, and Voorhees University in South Carolina.
Spelman College has secured $437,000 in federal Community Project Funding for a new project centered on enhancing the college’s campus safety. The new funds will go toward improved communication and emergency alert systems, campus security upgrades, and community education and safety initiatives.
Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, received a $100,000 grant from The Boulé Foundation to support the HBCU’s BEST Men Program, a new initiative that aims to keep young male students enrolled and on track to graduation. The program provides students with mentorship, leadership development opportunities, academic support, career preparation, and wellness resources.
