Two Black Scientists Appointed Assistant Professors at Liberal Arts Colleges

Courtney Marshall is a new assistant professor of neuroscience at Haverford College in suburban Philadelphia. Earlier in her career, Dr. Marshall was an adjunct faculty member at the college. Most recently, she served on the faculty at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Dr. Marshall studies the pathological mechanisms behind neurodegeneration, focusing on how proteins aggregate and impair function in Alzheimer’s disease. At Haverford, she will teach courses on cellular and molecular neuroscience and mentor senior thesis students.

A graduate of Davidson College in North Carolina, Dr. Marshall earned a Ph.D. from Drexel University in Philadelphia. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania.

Akachukwu Obi is a new assistant professor in the Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences at Claremont McKenna College in California. Drawing from foundations in molecular studies of structure-property relationships, bulk materials characterization, and systems-level sustainability assessments, Dr. Obi’s research centers on improving the performance of earth-abundant inorganic materials for climate mitigation and energy storage. He is particularly interested in developing alkali and alkaline earth compounds for carbon dioxide capture and hydrogen storage.

Dr. Obi is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he majored in chemistry. He holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Virginia. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
