Saint Augustine’s University, the historically Black educational institution in Raleigh, North Carolina, has announced that it is discontinuing it intercollegiate athletics teams in men’s golf and women’s tennis. The university will continue to offer intercollegiate teams in six men’s sports and seven women’s sports.
George Williams, the director of athletics at the university, stated, “We are no different from any other institution facing difficult choices due to the economic downturn. We are looking for both sports to return in the near future, however.”
Earlier this year, Saint Augustine’s University considered a plan to take over St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, and to eventually make it a branch campus of the university. However, Saint Augustine’s backed out of the plan saying “the acquisition of Saint Paul’s College, at this time, would significantly challenge the fiscal stability of Saint Augustine’s University.”
Saint Paul’s College closed on June 30.
