This Week’s Roundup of New Appointments of Blacks in Higher Education

TchounwouPaul Tchounwou was named associate dean for graduate and international programs in the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Jackson State University. Dr. Tchounwou has been on the Jackson State faculty since 1996 and is now a Presidential Distinguished Professor. He is also the director of the Department of Defense’s Center of Excellence in STEM Education and the National Institutes of Health Center for Environmental Health on the Jackson State campus.

Dr. Tchounwou holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Yaounde in Cameroon. He earned a master of public health degree and a doctorate in environmental toxicology from the Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans.

AlondaThomasAlonda Thomas is the new director of media relations for the Office of Communication at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She has been serving as a senior publicist at The FrontPage Firm, an entertainment public relations company in Los Angeles.

Thomas is a graduate of Florida A&M University and holds a master’s degree from Florida State University.

Aaron JamesAaron James was named interim athletics director at Grambling State University in Louisiana. He has been serving as interim director of development and holds the post as associate athletic director for marketing and promotion.

James, who is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame, also served as interim athletics director in late 2011.

ElbertRMaloneElbert R. Malone, assistant vice president for sponsored programs at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, was elected president of the National Sponsored Programs Administrators Alliance-HBCUs. Malone has served as interim president for the past year.

The association, founded in 1993, has a mission to aid historically Black colleges and universities in the efficiency and effectiveness of sponsored program administration.

GeraldHunterGerald Hunter was appointed vice president for finance and administration at Norfolk State University in Virginia. He has been serving as vice chancellor for finance and administration and chief financial officer at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. He will begin his new job on September 1.

Before joining the staff at Winston-Salem State in 2008, Hunter was chief financial officer at Antioch University and previously held financial posts at Kentucky State University, Murray State University, and Northern Kentucky University.
