Faculty at Harris-Stowe State University Vote to Unionize

hssuFull-time faculty at Harris-Stowe State University, a historically Black educational institution in St. Louis, have voted to join the Missouri National Education Association. Nearly four out of every five faculty members participating in the election voted to join the union.

Brian Elsesser, an assistant professor of history and a leader of the effort to unionize the faculty, stated, “There has not been adequate shared governance. We’re also pushing for greater transparency. We requested financial books from the university three months ago. We still haven’t received those.”

The university is the first one in Missouri to vote in a union for faculty members.
