The board of supervisors at Southern University in Baton Rouge has declared a “financial exigency,” which gives the administration wide powers to deal with the university’s budget shortfall. As a result of the declaration, Chancellor James Llorens has announced that all employees earning more than $30,000 a year will receive a furlough during the academic year which will reduce their pay by 10 percent. The furloughs include tenured faculty.
In addition, Chancellor Llorens will submit a reorganization plan to the board in the coming weeks that may include the elimination of some academic programs.
