In Memoriam: Maxine Herring Parker, 1944-2013

Maxine_ParkerThe Honorable Maxine Parker, president of the Birmingham City Council in Alabama who had a 41-year career as an administrator at Talladega College in Alabama, died earlier this month in Birmingham. She was 69 years old.

A graduate of Talladega College, Parker returned to serve as an assistant to the president and secretary to the board of trustees. She retired from the college in 2005 after 41 years of service.

Parker then began a new career in politics. She was elected to the Birmingham City Council in 2005 and was reelected in 2009 and 2013. She was elected council president last month, shortly before her death.
