New Administrative Appointments for Six Black Americans in Higher Education

Lance Kennedy-Phillips has been selected to serve as interim senior vice provost for student success at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Kennedy-Phillips has served as Penn State’s vice provost for planning, assessment, and institutional research since 2015. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education administration, including roles at the University of Florida, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Ohio State University.

Dr. Kennedy-Phillips is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where he majored in sociology. He holds a master of education degree and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Kiona Sinks was named executive director of marketing and communications at Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, Missouri. She was was director of marketing and communications for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.

Sinks is a graduate of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, where she majored in sociology and psychology. She earned an MBA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Ike Ugboaja was appointed executive director of workforce and adult learning at Talladega College in Alabama. Dr. Ugboaja has more than 20 years of experience in higher education and business, with a background in workforce engagement, student success, academic leadership, and program development. Previously, he was provost and vice president of academic affairs at Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Dr. Ugboaja holds a doctor of business administration degree.

Johnny Bernard Hill has been named senior director of development and strategic partnerships at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Hill’s appointment marks a return to the HBCU, where he previously served as dean of the Divinity School. Most recently, he was a visiting assistant professor of theology at Duke University Divinity School. In his new role, he will focus on strengthening philanthropic support, expanding corporate and foundation relationships, and developing partnerships that advance Shaw University’s priorities.

A U.S. Army Veteran, Dr. Hill earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morehouse College in Atlanta. He holds a master of divinity degree and a master of theology degree from Duke University and a doctorate in philosophical theology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Maya T. Mapp is the new vice president for enrollment management and student success at Bronx Community College. Mapp comes to her new role from Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, where she was associate vice president for enrollment management. She previously served in leadership roles at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania, Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, Eastern Kentucky University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Mapp earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Ohio State University and her master’s degree in higher education leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Leandra Hayes-Burgess has been selected to serve as interim vice chancellor for university advancement at North Carolina A&T State University. Most recently, Hayes-Burgess was vice president for institutional advancement at Benedict College in South Carolina. Her other experience in higher education includes advancement and development leadership roles with the University of Miami, Claflin University, Talladega College, Bennett College, and Livingstone College.

Hayes-Burgess is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she majored in communication arts. She holds a master’s degree in philanthropy and development from Saint Mary’s University of Minneosta.
