Texas Tech Professor Develops Online Petroleum Engineering Course for Mozambique Students

Significant natural gas discoveries have been found in the Mozambique Channel between East Africa and the island of Madagascar. But there are very people in the area with any expertise in petroleum engineering.

Oil companies with leases in the channel contacted Lloyd Heinze, a professor of petroleum engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and asked him to create and teach a master’s degree level course in the subject for students at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, the capital and largest city in Mozambique.

Professor Heinze developed the course and taught it online while giving lectures in Lubbock and Houston. The courses were taught in English to students whose native tongue is Portuguese. The online lectures could be saved and revisited so students having difficulties with the language barrier could revisit the lectures whenever they wanted. After the online sessions were completed, Professor Heinze went to Mozambique and taught there for one month.

Dr. Heinze has developed two additional online courses on drilling that will begin in February. He may return to Mozambique over the coming summer.
