Black Student Among the First Five Doctoral Degree Recipients at Georgia College & State University

Last month, five women earned the doctor of nursing practice degree from Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville. They are the first students to earn doctoral degrees in the 125-year history of the educational institution.

gradiconDr. Chioma Okereke is one of the five women in the first cohort of doctoral graduates. A native of Nigeria, Dr. Okereke moved to the United States in 1986 with her husband. The mother of three operates a successful nursing practice in Marietta, Georgia. Also she has been hired to a nursing faculty position at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

Dr. Okereke’s parents made the trip from Nigeria to see her receive her doctoral degree. “It means a lot to me to have my parents here from Nigeria,” said Dr. Okereke. “I am thrilled to have achieved my doctorate and having them here alongside my family is just the icing on the cake to this celebration.”
