Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Names an Award for a Black Scholar

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) has announced the establishment of the Dorothy Bracey/Janice Joseph Minority and Women New Scholar Award. The first winner of the new award will be honored at the ACJS conference in Orlando, Florida, next March.

Dorothy Bracey was the first woman to serve as president of the ACJS and was chair of the department of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

Janice Joseph is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She is the first person of African descent and the first foreign-born individual to serve as president of the ACJS.

Dr. Joseph is a graduate of the University of the West Indies. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from York University in Toronto.
