Stanford Struggles to Increase the Number of African American Graduate Students

A new report from Patricia Gumport, vice provost for graduate education at Stanford University, finds that underrepresented minorities make up 9.3 percent of all 8,796 graduate students at the university. Sixteen years ago in 1995, underrepresented minorities made up 10.7 percent of all graduate students.

The report stated that there are 279 African American graduate students at Stanford. They make up only 3.2 percent of all graduate students. In contrast, the latest data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that Blacks make up 7 percent of all undergraduate students. According to the 2011 JBHE annual survey, Blacks make up 10.7 percent of the entering freshman class at Stanford. This is three times the percentage of African American students in Stanford’s graduate programs.
