Zambia’s White President Holds a Ph.D.

Upon the death of President Michael Sata, Guy Scott was appointed acting president of the nation of Zambia in southern Africa. He is the first White president of a sub-Saharan African nation since F.W. de Klerk resigned as president of South Africa in 1994.

Northern Rhodesia gained independence from Britain in 1964 and changed its name to Zambia. President Scott was born in Zambia but his parents are from the United Kingdom. Under the nation’s constitution, Scott is not eligible to run for a full term as president because his parents were not born in the country. He will serve as acting president until an election is held.

President Scott is a graduate of the University of Cambridge in England, where he majored in mathematics and economics. He earned a Ph.D. in cognitive science at Sussex University and studied robotics at the University of Oxford.
