New University Administrative Posts for Three African Americans

Darryl-HellerDarryl Heller was named director of student and community engagement at Indiana University South Bend. For the past three years, he has been serving as a visiting lecturer at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Dr. Heller is a graduate of the College of Charleston in South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in American studies from Columbia University in New York and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago.

woodardJoanne Woodward was appointed vice president for diversity and inclusion at the University of North Texas in Denton. She will begin her new duties this summer. She has been serving as vice provost for institutional equity and diversity and chief diversity officer at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Woodward is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, where she majored in history. She holds a master’s degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

shumate_bioJabar Shumate was named vice president for the university community at the University of Oklahoma. In this role he will oversee all diversity initiatives at the university.

Shumate is the former press secretary for the president of the University of Oklahoma. He has served in both houses of the state legislature. Shumate holds a bachelor’s degree in public affairs and a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
