Tyler Stovall to Lead the American Historical Association

stovallTyler Stovall, dean of humanities at the University of California, Santa Cruz has been named president-elect of the American Historical Association (AHA). Dr. Stovall will serve one year as president-elect and then become president for one year. The AHA is the nation’s largest professional organization devoted to the study and promotion of history.

Professor Stovall became dean earlier this year. Previously, he was a professor of French history and dean of the undergraduate division of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Earlier, he was on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz for 13 years and chaired the history department for three years.

Dr. Stovall is a graduate of Harvard University. He holds a master’s degree in European history and a Ph.D. in modern European/French history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dean Stovall’s latest book is Transnational France: The Modern History of a Universal Nation (Westview Press, 2015). An earlier book where Dr. Stovall is a co-editor is France Noire: The History and Politics of Blackness (Duke University Press, 2012).
