Xavier University in New Orleans has signed an agreement with the government of China to establish a Confucius Institute on campus. There are more than 300 Confucius Institutes worldwide and 80 are in the United States. Universities and school systems that establish a Confucius Institute receive support to develop Chinese language and cultural courses.
Under the agreement, Xavier will begin to offer courses in the Mandarin language during the spring 2012 semester. A group of students from Xavier will travel to China this summer to study at Hebei University.
Xavier will be the first historically Black college or university and only university in Louisiana to have a Confucius Institute.
Saint Augustine’s College has a partnership with the Confucius Institute at NC State University and has the Confucius Institute on it’s campus. Through the Institute, Saint Augustine’s has a Confucius classroom where a class in Chinese was taught this past semester and students have traveled to China the last three summers. We just had a visit from educational dignitaries from China three weeks ago.
