Six African Americans Appointed to Key Posts in Higher Education Administration

Bassard:TriplettKatherine Bassard was named senior vice provost for faculty affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a professor of English at the university. Dr. Bassard joined the university’s faculty in 1999 and was promoted to full professor in 2010. Earlier, she taught at the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Bassard is a graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Pickrum, VitaVita C. Pickrum was appointed vice president of institutional advancement at Delaware State University in Dover. She was also named president of the Delaware State University Foundation. She has been on the staff of the development office at the university since 2008.

Pickrum holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and education and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She is currently studying for a doctorate in educational leadership at Delaware State.

Smith_Adam-Adam A. Smith was named director of undergraduate advising and student success in the Office for Academic Affairs at the University of Alabama. He was the assistant vice president for student success at the University of Akron in Ohio.

Smith is a graduate of Concordia University in Wisconsin. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from National Louis University.

anthonyPamela A. Anthony was selected as the next vice president for student affairs at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She will begin her new role on February 1. Since 2012, Dr. Anthony has been serving as dean of students at Iowa State University.

Dr. Anthony is a graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she majored in speech pathology. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from Georgia State University.

Constance-MalletteConstance Mallette is the new associate vice chancellor for financial planning and budget at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.  She was director of business information systems at North Carolina Central University in Durham.

Mallette is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. She holds a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Winston-Salem State University.

Ivan Harrell HeadshotIvan L. Harrell II is the new executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston. He was vice president of student success at Lone Star College in Cypress, Texas.

Dr. Harrell is a graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. He holds a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.
