Stacey Franklin Jones has resigned from her position as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, effective December 31. Dr. Jones has been chancellor for only 15 months. The university has seen enrollments decline by more than 50 percent over the past five years, which has reduced revenues and created financial problems for the university.
Before becoming chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in October 2014, Dr. Jones was a consultant in Washington, D.C. She has served on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. In July 2010, Dr. Jones was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bowie State University in Maryland.
Dr. Jones is a summa cum laude graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. She holds master’s degrees in numerical science and technical management from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in computer science from George Washington University.
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has named Thomas Conway as interim chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. The board is expected to consider appointing Dr. Conway the permanent chancellor at its regularly scheduled meeting in January.
Dr. Conway has been serving as vice chancellor and chief of staff at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. He has been on the staff there since 2008. Previously, Dr. Conway served for 32 years on the staff at North Carolina State University in Raleigh in various roles. Among the posts he held were dean of undergraduate academic programs, vice provost for enrollment management, and director of the university’s counseling center.
Dr. Conway holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. He earned a Ph.D. in counselor education from North Carolina State University.
W. Louis Bissette, chair of the University of North Carolina board of governors, stated the “Elizabeth City State University is an important and essential institution to the University of North Carolina System. I believe Dr. Conway will provide the experienced, stable, and innovative leadership ECSU needs.”
