New Administrative Assignments for Eight African Americans in Higher Education

greenJohnny Green was appointed assistant vice president of outreach in the Division of Student Affairs at Auburn University in Alabama. He has been serving as director of the Veterans Resource Center at the university. He is the former director of the university’s Center for Diversity and Race Relations.

Dr. Green holds a bachelor’s degree, an MBA, a master of public administration degree, and a Ph.D., all from Auburn University.

Bazzel_Darrell13_2718Darrell Bazzell was named senior vice president and chief financial officer at the University of Texas at Austin, effective April 18. Bazzell currently serves as vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bazzell is the former secretary of the Department of Natural Resources for the state of Wisconsin.

Bazzell is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in sociology.

Troy Miller was appointed assistant vice president for enrollment management at Bowie State University in Maryland. He is the former associate vice president for enrollment management at Coppin State University in Baltimore.

Earlier in his career, Miller held several enrollment management positions at the New York Institute of Technology.

Anthony Tillman was named associate provost at Washington University in St. Louis. He has been serving as assistant provost at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He has been on the staff at Southern Methodist University since 2007.

Tillman holds a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology and a master’s degree in counseling and personnel services from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He is completing doctoral work at the University of Alabama.

karen_miller_Karen L. Miller was appointed vice president for human resources at Middlebury College in Vermont. She has been serving as a special adviser to the president of Morehouse College in Atlanta. She is the former academic dean at the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta.

Miller is a graduate of Emory University and Harvard Law School. She is currently completing a doctorate in education at the University of Georgia.

rovarisDereck Rovaris Sr. was appointed vice provost for diversity at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, effective July 1. He currently serves as associate vice chancellor for academic and multicultural affairs at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Rovaris is a graduate of the University of Kansas. He holds a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Xavier University in New Orleans and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Illinois.

Justin_MathisJustin Mathis was named assistant director of recruitment for Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has been serving as coordinator of admissions, recruitment, and outreach at Alcorn State University in Mississippi.

Mathis holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in workforce development and training from Alcorn State University.

SanfordO’Neill Sanford is the new director of bands at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He is a visiting assistant professor of music at the university and was serving as interim director of bands. Sanford came to Jackson State in 2012 as a recruiter for the music department.

A graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Sanford holds a master’s degree in music education from the Vandercook College of Music in Chicago.
