University of Oregon Responds to Black Student Protestor Demands

oregonThe University of Oregon has agreed to take action based on demands presented by student protestors in demonstrations held on campus in recent months. In announcing the new actions, Michael H. Shill, president of the University of Oregon, stated that “we are dedicated to doing all we can to foster a campus climate that embraces diversity, encourages equity, and values inclusion. In particular, we recognize that we can and must do more as an institution to meet the needs of Black students.”

Among the actions that will be taken are:

  • Increased efforts to recruit more Black students and the hiring of recruitment officers who are experienced in working with the African American community.
  • Invitations to six Black fraternities and sororities to open chapters on campus.
  • The establishment of a Black residential community on campus.
  • The creation of an advisory group that will work to increase the retention of African American students.
  • A new lecture series that will bring prominent African American scholars to speak on campus.
  • The university will launch a new website that will publish detailed data on university diversity.
