Penn State Alumni Chapter Established in Soweto

The Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association has announced the establishment of the group’s first chapter in sub-Saharan Africa. The Southern Africa Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association recently was announced at a reception at the Soweto Hotel near Johannesburg, South Africa. Two dozens Penn State alumni were present at the founding ceremony and 100 other Penn State alumni in the region have contacted the new chapter.

The ceremony was attended by Michael Adewumi, vice provost for global programs at Penn State and Collins Airhihenbuwa, chair of the department of biobehavioral health at Penn State. The keynote address was given by Sizwe Mabizela, a Penn State alumnus, who is deputy vice chancellor of Rhodes University in South Africa.

The group plans to raise money for a scholarship fund to send students from South Africa to Penn State.
