The Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta has the largest entering class is school history this fall. There are 151 new students on campus this fall. Some 92 of the 151 students are in the medical doctorate program. Another nine students are enrolled in the Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences. The remaining students are in master’s degree programs in biomedical research, clinical research, medical sciences, public health or neuroscience.
Sandra Harris-Hooker, vice president and executive vice dean of research and academic administration at the Morehouse School of Medicine, told the new entering students that “adversaries will come in many forms; they will place negativity and doubt in your spirit as to whether this is really the profession for you. So you must discern that, yes, this is the right path for me. You must decide that you are willing to keep working when it seems like there are no more hours left in the day, when there are too many notes to review and when most everything that you review is not on the exam. And you must determine to continue down the path to your chosen profession.”
Dr. Harris-Hooker holds a Ph.D. in developmental biology from Atlanta University and a Ph.D. in biology from Dillard University in New Orleans. She did postdoctoral work in cardiovascular pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
