Hampton University Joins the Big Leagues in Meteorology

hamptonHampton University, the historically Black educational institution in Virginia, recently installed a $5 million direct broadcast weather antenna on top of a building in the downtown Hampton Harbour Center. It is one of only 10 such devices nationwide and the only one operated by a historically Black university.

The direct broadcast weather antenna receives data from satellites in earth orbit in real time. Thus residents of the Hampton area will be able to receive up-to-the-minute information about approaching thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. The real-time information will be available to the public.

William B. Moore, a professor in the School of Science at Hampton University, said that “the Direct Broadcast System that we are installing is a great way for Hampton University to make a positive impact on the lives and livelihoods of the people in our community.”
