More Good News on HBCU Enrollments

In recent weeks, JBHE has reported encouraging news on higher enrollments at a large number of historically Black colleges and universities. Now Clark Atlanta University in Georgia and Bowie State University in Maryland join the parade.

Bowie_State_University_SealAt Bowie State University in Maryland, 967 first-year students are on campus this fall. This is the highest number in university history. There were 591 first-year students in 2015. Total enrollments at Bowie State are 5,669 this fall, up from 5,430 in 2015. The university reports that an aggressive recruiting strategy resulted in a far higher student yield for students who accepted the university’s offer of admission.

cauClark Atlanta University reports that there are 1,200 first-year entering students on campus this fall. This is up 20 percent from a year ago. This is the largest entering class since 2007. Total undergraduate enrollment of nearly 4,000 students is the highest in six years.
