The Morehouse School of Medicine, a historically Black educational institution in Atlanta, has launched the new Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Training Program in an effort to increase the number of Black cardiologists.
Candidates selected for the fellowships will spend three years at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Atlanta. It is hoped that by the summer of 2019, there will be six fellows in the program.
Anekwe Onwuanyi, chief of cardiology at the Morehouse School of Medicine, stated that “this program is integral in the effort to close the gap in cardiovascular disease outcomes and dovetails with MSM’s mission to improve health outcomes across all populations. With this program, MSM is creating its own pipeline of exceptional physicians specializing in cardiac patient care and research.”
Dr. Onwuanyi received his medical degree at the University of Lagos in Nigeria. He completed his residency at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York city.
