Two African Americans Stepping Down From Posts at HBCUs

Tola Thompson, the assistant vice president of government relations at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, has resigned his position. Thompson has been appointed chief of staff for Congressman Al Lawson, the newly elected U.S. Representative from Florida’s Fifth Congressional District. Thompson is not a newcomer to Capitol Hill. He was senior legislative assistant and political director for U.S. Representative Carrie Meek from Florida who left the House in 2003.

Both Thompson and Representative Lawson are graduates of Florida A&M University. Thompson’s father served as the head trainer and equipment manager for the Florida A&M University football team for more than 50 years.

ingram-elwandaElwanda D. Ingram, professor of English at Winston-Salem State University, has announced that she is retiring at the end of the year. Dr. Ingram has taught at the university for the past 37 years.

Professor Ingram is a graduate of Morgan State University in Baltimore, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Illinois and earned a Ph.D. in English with a concentration in African American literature.
