Tuskegee University Adds to Its Digitized Audio Archives

Tuskegee University, the historically Black educational institution in Alabama, has announced that is has digitized several important audio recordings from its university archives and is making these recordings available to researchers. The original recordings were on seven-inch reel-to-reel tape but are now available online.

The new additions to the online archives include a tape of a 1959 speech by Jackie Robinson to the Tuskegee Civic Association, a 1957 speech to the same organization by Martin Luther King Jr., and a 1966 speech by Muhammad Ali on the Tuskegee campus delivered before the annual football game with Alabama State University.

Dana Chandler, university archivist at Tuskegee University, notes that the speeches “were given over 50 years ago and have not been heard since then. The messages are still very relevant today.”
