The Next Provost at Emory University in Atlanta

Emory University in Atlanta has announced that Dwight McBride will be the university’s next provost, beginning on July 1. Dr. McBride is the Daniel Hale Williams Professor of African American studies, English, and Performance Studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. There, he also serves as dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for graduate education.

Earlier is his career, Professor McBride served on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. He was dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2007 to 2010.

Dr. McBride is the founder and co-editor of the James Baldwin Review. He is co-editor of A Melvin Dixon Critical Reader (University of Mississippi Press, 2006) and author of Impossible Witnesses: Truth, Abolitionism, and Slave Testimony (New York University Press, 2001).

Professor McBride is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey, where he majored in English and African American studies. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles.
