Three HBCUs Report Record Enrollment Numbers

Prairie View A&M University in Texas has seen an 8 percent increase in total enrollments this fall, driven by a 15 percent increase in the number of first-time, full-time freshman students. The university also has boosted its retention rate.

Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has its largest entering class in school history, numbering more than 500 students. The university also reports that the entering class is the “most talented and diverse in school history.” More than 30 percent of the freshman class are enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs.

Meharry Medical College in Nashville recently held its white coat ceremony for the largest entering class in the history of the medical school.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
