
As has been the case for several years, Spelman College in Atlanta was ranked as the nation’s best HBCU. Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Hampton University in Virginia held the second and third spots. Morehouse College in Atlanta was ranked fourth. Xavier University in New Orleans moved up one spot to fifth position.

9. Fisk University (Nashville, Tennessee) (tied)
Spelman College was ranked as the 61st best liberal college overall in this year’s U.S. News rankings. A year ago, Spelman ranked 72nd.
Howard University ranked in the 110th spot among the nation’s beat national universities. This is a jump of 14 spots from last year’s rankings and 25 spots from two years ago. In 2010, Howard was rated as the 96th best national university.
