Southern University, the historically Black educational institution in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, reports that for the first time in seven years, there has been significant increases in enrollments. The university reports that the number of new first-time students is up 13 percent from a year ago.
Ray Belton, chancellor of the Southern University System, stated that “the campus has suffered from declining enrollments for multiple years, so this gives indication that we are on the right path.”
In addition, the university reports huge increases in students who have enrolled in online courses. Southern University targeted working professionals in its marketing efforts. And this paid off with an increase of 70 percent for students enrolled in online programs.
Southern University New Orleans also reports a 47 percent increase in first-time, first-year students.
