North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is the newest member of the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The nuclear physics research consortium is based at Duke University. It is one of only four Department of Energy Centers of Excellence in nuclear physics.
NCCU faculty and students have conducted research at the TUNL facility for more than two decades. But recently, the university signed an agreement that makes it a full-fledged partner in the research group. Formal participation will increase the university’s access to TUNL facilities and provide greater opportunities for NCCU students to participate in the research. In addition to Duke, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill participate in the consortium.
Carlton Wilson, interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at NCCU, said that “we are truly excited to join this intellectually rich consortium, which has advanced the nuclear physics frontier and prepared students and young scientists to work in the field – from serving as science advisors to United States presidents to leading global research – for more than 50 years.”
