Research on HBCUs Wins Outstanding Dissertation Award

Tryan L. McMickens, a visiting assistant professor at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, received the 2011-2012 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the PDK International Foundation. The award, which comes with a $5,000 cash prize, is given to a scholar whose research shows the most promise for improving education. Dr. McMickens dissertation examines how historically Black colleges and universities prepare their students for cross-racial, post-collegiate environments.

Dr. McMickens earned his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation, entitled “Racism Readiness as an Educational Outcome for Graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities: A Multi-Campus Grounded Theory Study,” will be published in the May 2012 issue of Kappan magazine. In doing research for this project, D. McMickens interviewed more than 80 alumni and graduating seniors at 20 HBCUs.
