Benjamin Akande to Lead the Africa Initiative at Washington University in St. Louis

Washington University in St. Louis has announced that Benjamin Akande will serve as director of the university’s Africa Initiative. He will also serve as senior adviser to the chancellor of the university.

In accepting the post, Dr. Akande said “this is a mission that is extremely powerful and one that transcends St. Louis to the world and into Africa. I am looking forward to crafting and implementing a program that will build upon the work Washington University is already doing internationally and on the continent of Africa.”

Dr. Akande, a Nigerian-born American citizen. was president of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, from 2015 to 2017. Before being named president of Westminster College, he had been serving as a professor of economics and dean of the School of Business and Technology at Webster University in St. Louis.

Dr. Akande came to the United States to study at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration, Dr. Akande went on to earn two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Oklahoma.
