Mickey Burnim to Lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore

The University System of Maryland has named Mickey L. Burnim as interim president of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. On July 1, he will take over the leadership of the university from outgoing president Juliette Bell.

Dr. Burnim served as president of Bowie State University in Maryland from 2006 to 2017. Previously, he was chancellor at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Earlier in his career, he was assistant vice president for academic affairs in the general administration of the University of North Carolina System and was a staff economist at the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Robert Care, chancellor of the University System of Maryland , stated that “Mickey Burnim is a widely respected member of the University System of Maryland community with success leading two historically Black institutions, including more than a decade of excellent service as president of Bowie State University. He is the ideal leader to guide the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on an interim basis while the search and selection process for a new president concludes.”

Dr. Burnim holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dear Dr. Burnim, Congratulations on your next endeavor. I was thinking that by now you would be only concerned with the tempo and rhythm of your swing and maybe the tide schedule. I of course know that your next role is your passion and that the entire community of University of Maryland Eastern Shore is very fortunate to have your future leadership. I hope all continues to go well. Your PGA Golf Professional and friend, Guy M. Thompson
