Two African American Scholars Receive Prestigious Honors

Walter E. Massey, who served as president of Morehouse College in Atlanta from 1995 to 2007, is the first living alumnus of the college to have an endowed chair named in his honor. The Walter Eugene Massey Endowed Chair of Physical Science was made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

A native of Mississippi, Dr. Massey is an alumnus of Morehouse College. He earned a Ph.D. in physics at Washington University in St. Louis. He has served on the faculty at the University of Illinois and Brown University and was the provost of the University of California System.

Sheridan Quarless Kingsberry, an associate professor in the master of social work program on the Wilmington campus of Delaware State University, was named the 2018 Delaware Social Worker of the Year by the local chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Dr. Kingsberry has taught at Delaware State University since 2003.

Dr. Kingsberry holds a bachelor’s degree in communication, a master of social work degree, and a Ph.D. in social work from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
