Texas Southern University’s Charles McClelland to Lead the Southwest Athletic Conference

Charles McClelland, director of athletics at Texas Southern University in Houston is stepping down from his post after 10 years to become commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

In accepting the position, Dr. McClelland stated “it’s been an honor and a privilege to serve Texas Southern University for the past 10 years. I’ve been surrounded by wonderful people, and this has been one of the best family work environments I’ve ever experienced. I am excited to be the new commissioner, and I want to take the same energy and effort we have put forth here at Texas Southern and spread it across all nine SWAC institutions.”

The 10 members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference are Alabama A&M Univerity, Alabama State University, Alcorn State University (Mississippi), University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling State University (Louisiana) Jackson State University (Mississippi), Mississippi Valley State University, Prairie View A&M University (Texas), Southern University (Louisiana), and Texas Southern University.

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. McClelland holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA from Prairie View A&M University. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Texas A&M University.
