Claflin University Has Become a Fundraising Powerhouse

Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, reports that 45 percent of its living alumni made a financial contribution to the university in 2011. That is the highest giving rate ever recorded by the university.

Claflin has mounted a “First to 50” campaign with the goal of being the first historically Black college or university to achieve a 50 percent alumni giving rate.

The university has implemented targeted campaigns through alumni groups in major cities with large numbers of Claflin graduates, including Atlanta and New York. A call center was opened on campus for telemarketing campaigns directed at alumni. Donations can be made online at the university’s web site and visitors to campus can donate by swiping their credit cards at terminals on campus.
