About the Opportunity

Brown HRPP is growing!

As part of the BIRCH initiative, Brown will soon be the main HRPP and Institutional Review Board (IRB) of record for Brown, Lifespan and Care New England health systems, and our HRPP is growing to meet this increased responsibility. The HRPP will be responsible for approximately 4000 protocols across eight institutions, spanning every area of academic and clinical research.

Reporting to the HRPP Director, the HRPP Assistant Director is responsible for day-to-day oversight of IRB administrators and IRB operations. The AD supports compliant and timely IRB operations, ensuring consistency between operations and standard operating procedures, assists with policy and procedure development and updates, and develops IRB guidance materials as needed. The AD advises IRB members and investigators on regulatory issues, ensures accurate and timely minutes from committee meetings, assists with general questions, and oversees the drafting and approval of the IRB committee meeting minutes. The Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring that their team is trained and that training for staff and researchers is current, and that new training is developed as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 7+ years related experience in research administration, at least 5 of which must be in human research protections administration
  • Preferred: advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, JD, PhD)
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated aptitude and capacity to supervise
  • Experience working in an academic or clinical research setting
  • Certified IRB Professional (CIP) certification at time of hire preferred
  • Experience with electronic submission systems preferred

Competencies

  • In-depth understanding of all applicable federal and State regulations pertaining to human subjects research.
  • Ability to advise and counsel on matters of general research compliance and ethical human participant research practices.
  • Proven track record of strong leadership and team building skills and experience working collaboratively to motivate others. Ability to supervise effectively.
  • High level of experience and comfort working independently with faculty, staff, students, medical professionals and external agencies in complex organizations.
  • Proficient with computer programs and electronic systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously and to effectively prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong problem solver and strategic decision maker.
  • Ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
