Director of Library Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Brown University

Job Description:

Diversity, equity, and inclusion and associated issues of racial justice continue to be major commitments at Brown University.  These commitments are integral to the Library’s mission on campus as well as its growth and development as an organization.  Every member of the Library’s administration and staff is responsible for contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Library.  As Brown’s focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion has increased through the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) and other initiatives, the Library’s specialized skills, resources, and services are being called upon in new ways.  At the same time, the Library is also actively identifying new opportunities to make important contributions to the University’s goals through its own work.

The Director of Library Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion reports directly to the University Librarian, providing content knowledge, professional expertise, strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and collaborative guidance for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across the Library and with University-wide impact. Working closely with and advising other senior Library leaders, and serving as a member of key Library leadership committees, the position is responsible for directing organizational and programmatic initiatives and plays an important contributing role in work to expand outreach to campus and wider communities and to fostering inclusive workplace culture.

The Brown University Library is a dynamic center of scholarship and community at the heart of a world-class research university. Supporting and collaborating with a broad and diverse academic constituency, the Library is essential for Brown’s mission “to serve the community, the nation, and the world by discovering, communicating, and preserving knowledge and understanding in a spirit of free inquiry.” Integrating with Brown’s ambitious strategic plans, the Library is a site of innovation that fuels intellectual creativity. Signature Library initiatives include the establishment of the Center for Library Exploration and Research to increase campus and community impact, and the Racial Justice Project to assess and counteract the legacies of historical racism in library practice. We are seeking outstanding library professionals at all levels of the organization who are excited about advancing academic excellence at the highest level, and who will bring a wide array of backgrounds, experiences, and abilities to a scholarly community that is actively committed to being more diverse and inclusive.

Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in librarianship or related fields, or combination of an advanced degree in a relevant subject area and experience with libraries, archives, museums, or similar institutions
  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional work experience
  • Prior work in diversity or multicultural affairs, and/or successful implementation of DEI initiatives
  • Academic or professional training in, or demonstrated knowledge of, current critical/theoretical approaches and best practices for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within institutions
