Job Description:
Summary:
The Research Assistant will contribute to various aspects of experimental work and general operation in the labs of Dr. Sonia Mayoral and Dr. Alexander Jaworski in the Department of Neuroscience. This includes assisting with the overall administration of both labs and daily lab activities, including mouse colony management, maintaining cell lines and reagents, tissue collection and processing, and assisting with experimental analysis. This position will be shared 50% of the time supporting the Mayoral lab and 50% of the time supporting the Jaworski lab with the same responsibilities and supporting actions.
That Mayoral lab studies glia-neuron interactions in development and disease, while the Jaworski lab investigates the cellular molecular mechanisms of axon guidance and neural circuit assembly during embryogenesis. Both labs employ a variety of experimental methods, including classic and modern molecular and cell biological approaches and in vivo mouse genetics.
This is a fixed -term position with a current end date of one year from hire, which may be extended based upon available funding.
Job Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences.
- Required: Prior related experience or extensive coursework. (grade 7)
- Required: 1-2 years relevant laboratory experience. (grade 8)
- And/ or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Required: Direct experience with mouse husbandry and colony management.
- Experience with cell culture techniques is a plus.
- Experience with biochemistry techniques such as RT- PC and Western blotting is a plus.
- Experience with immunohistology techniques and fluorescence imaging is a plus.

- Knowledge of and hands- on experience with basic mouse husbandry and handling.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Basic skills with MS Office Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
- Ability to be observant and self-motived, think critically, and problem-solve.
- Must be able to multitask and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
