CPHG Emerging Scholars in Genome Sciences Symposium

The Center for Public Health Genomics (CPHG) in the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine will host the 5th Annual Emerging Scholars in Genome Sciences Symposium on September 24-25, 2024. The symposium will be held in person on the UVA Grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia. The symposium, supported by the Anderson Distinguished lecture series, highlights a diverse group of “emerging scholars”, who are talented postdoctoral scientists conducting cutting-edge research in the broad area of genome sciences from labs around the country. The goal of the symposium is to highlight innovative research, provide a networking opportunity for postdocs to interact with and learn from their future peers, and foster relationships between the UVA community and the next generation of genome scientists.
Soliciting Applications
The planning committee is soliciting applications from emerging scholars doing research in the broad area of genome sciences to present at the symposium. For the purposes of the symposium, an “emerging scholar” is defined as anyone in a training position that has completed their doctorate but has not begun their first academic faculty or industry position. The planning committee will select approximately eight emerging scholars from among the applications and invite them to speak at the symposium. As it has been in the past, the symposium is committed to presenting the full breadth of diversity in genome sciences and will include speakers from historically marginalized groups. Therefore, emerging scholars from groups under-represented in genome sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
In a separate process, the symposium will also highlight a keynote speaker to be selected and invited by trainees from the University of Virginia.
Eligibility
- The applicant should have a doctorate degree and maintain a full-time trainee position (postdoctoral fellow or equivalent) in an academic institution in the United States as of September 22, 2024.
- The applicant should be able to travel to Charlottesville, Virginia to present in person and attend the full symposium on September 24-25, 2024. The symposium organizer will cover the travel expenses for external speakers.
- Priority will be given to those who are at a senior stage of postdoctoral training but have not secured a faculty job position at the time of application.

Interested emerging scholars should complete the application form and submit application materials, including a CV with full publication list and a brief letter (no more than one page) stating their career goals, as one combined PDF file, through this link: Emerging Scholars in Genome Sciences Symposium Speaker Application.
