The inaugural Head of Research and Learning, Arts and Humanities will play a pivotal leadership role at Dartmouth Libraries. To advance the Libraries’ deep engagement with research, teaching, and learning across the arts and humanities, Dartmouth seeks a visionary and collaborative individual to provide strategic direction for a dedicated liaison librarian team. Through operational leadership, dynamic collaborations, and meaningful alignment with related teams across the Libraries, this new leader will strengthen the Libraries’ role at the intersection of ideas and inquiry for the arts and humanities at Dartmouth and beyond.

Dartmouth Libraries support academic excellence at all levels, partnering with the School of Arts & Sciences, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business, the Geisel School of Medicine, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. The Libraries include the iconic spaces of the Baker-Berry Library (which also is home to Evans Map Room, Jones Media Center, and Sherman Art Library) as well as specialized libraries, including Medical & Health Sciences Libraries, Feldberg Business & Engineering Library, and Special Collections. A new offsite Library Collections and Services Facility completed in 2023 accommodates additional physical collections, ensuring the long-term stewardship of materials collected over more than 200 years. We also maintain vibrant virtual spaces that serve our community, including an accessible and recently redesigned web site, vibrant social media channels, rich archival tools, and globally-relevant digital collections.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries, Research and Digital Strategies, the Head of Research and Learning, Arts and Humanities will help shape the future of academic librarianship. As academia wrestles with massive changes in the information ecosystem and an articulated need for multiple forms of expert guidance, the successful Head will steer the redefinition of the research and teaching support model at a time when the Dartmouth community needs it most. This position will also build impactful partnerships to enable arts and humanities librarians as they advance research, teaching, and learning. Additionally, the Head will enhance library integration into the curriculum and student success; guide high-performing librarians engaged in the evolving research and learning landscape; and connect academic communities to the vast expert resources Dartmouth Libraries offers. This position, alongside a paired Head of Research and Learning, Sciences and Social Sciences role, was created to help shape how Dartmouth Libraries engages the newly formed School of Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth.
The successful Head will position Dartmouth Libraries as an indispensable engine for academic excellence in the arts and humanities at Dartmouth. By fostering collaboration among liaison librarians and other library experts, they will drive proactive and innovative engagement with faculty, academic departments, interdisciplinary programs, and campus centers. As a member of the Associate Dean’s leadership team, the Head will actively support and shape the continued evolution of the liaison librarian role in response to the changing needs and challenges across research and learning for the arts and humanities. The Head will manage a team that currently has four FTE. This is a significant opportunity for a collaborative and strategic leader to shape Dartmouth Libraries’ engagement with arts and humanities research and learning, advancing the Libraries as an indispensable partner in the scholarly and academic life of the institution. The Head will have the opportunities to strategically shape the future of arts and humanities librarianship at Dartmouth, cultivate and deepen partnerships across the Libraries and academic community, lead and mentor a talented team of liaison librarians, and amplify the Libraries’ contribution and impact across the arts and humanities.
An ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS, MIS or the equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree, or experience working in an academic library is required. Additionally required are 3+ years’ experience supervising and/or mentoring staff, chairing committees, and leading projects, with proven leadership, management, and interpersonal skills which encourage teamwork, collaboration, and relationship building.
